The Apogee Elite Laser Machine from Cynosure

This amazing machine offers you two separate wavelengths in one system. We believe that these two wavelengths (755 & 1064) are optimal wavelengths for hair removal. The unique cooling system not only enhances client comfort, but also has no risk of causing an allergic reaction or dermatitis.

While several clinics do offer light treatment both laser and ipl, they are lacking the critical specifications that makes this machine stand out from the rest. The Apogee Elite delivers an impressive 80j/cm2 with a 10mm spot with its 1064nm Nd:Yag. The Elite has spot sizes 3,5,7,10,12 and 15mm, pulse durations between 0,4ms to 200ms, and repetition rates up to 5 shots per second. These specifications mean that it provides incredible versatility, greater client comfort and superior results. We are therefore also able to offer treatment of spider veins and sun spot removal.

The laser is attracted to the dark pigment in the hair called melanin. The energy from the laser travels down to the base of the hair follicle using melanin as a ‘conductor’ where it disperses as thermal energy. This damages the base of the hair follicle rendering it unable to produce hair as quickly. This rate of growth will decrease more as you have further treatments.

As well as the laser needing melanin, the hair must also be in a certain stage of its growth cycle for the treatment to be effective. This cycle is known as the ‘active growth phase’ or anagen, and is when the hair is connected to the base of the hair follicle. This connection provides a direct pathway for the laser energy to disperse where the hair is produced at the base of the follicle.

Not every hair is in this active phase at any one time on the body which is why you will need multiple treatments.

As melanin is needed in order for the treatment to be effective, laser hair removal does not work on blonde, white or grey hair.

Treatment is virtually painless. The sensation you feel resembles a rubber band snapping against the skin for a quick second with each pulse. Cold air is blown onto the skin during the procedure to relieve any mild discomfort.

You must have the treatment on a regular basis to get the maximum benefit. Facial and body hair is treated every 6 weeks. We recommend a minimum of six treatments.

You should shave the area to be treated the day before treatment. No waxing or plucking is allowed 6 weeks before & throughout the course of treatment, as hair needs to be in place to be targeted by the laser. The area should be shaved as closely as possible so that laser can target the most energy towards the hair follicle and not waste energy on the part of the hair above the skin’s surface.

You may have some redness in the skin; this is completely normal and generally settles within 24 hours. Protecting your skin from the sun is essential to avoid any darkening caused by increased pigment in the skin (hyperpigmentation).

Within 2 weeks, you should experience shedding of all treated hair. At first, hair will look like it is growing back, but it is coming through the skin to shed. Gently exfoliating can help speed up the process. After shedding finishes, you might experience little black dots in the skin – commonly referred to as “pepper spots” & these will eventually shed. Again exfoliating can help.

Lasers are optical devices which produce intense coherent, collimated & mono-chromatic beams of light. The laser can be fine-tuned to generate a very narrow band of light wavelengths. Lasers designed for permanent hair reduction emit wavelengths of light designed to be absorbed by the pigment in the hair (melanin). If the surrounding skin is relatively light compared to the colour of the hair, then the entire energy of the laser will be concentrated in the hair shaft, effectively destroying it without affecting the skin.

The ability of the laser to produce a very narrow bandwidth on a consistent basis is the key to safe efficient treatment.

Be aware that hair removal systems that use traditional light for treatment (Intense Pulse Light or IPL’s) are not true hair removal lasers. IPL’s use a highly concentrated beam of incoherent light to burn the hair shaft. A serious flaw with these systems is that they lack the laser’s ability to produce a selective bandwidth of light that will only affect the hair shaft (selective photothermolysis). IPL’s produce a wide bandwidth of light that can heat up all the surrounding tissue. IPL’s are generally cheaper devices & are used for various skin procedures first & foremost, with hair removal as more of an afterthought.

  • Lasers use the exact wavelength needed to effectively treat the hair in each pulse. Lasers are therefore more selective and more effective.
  • Lasers penetrate deeper into tissue and so can target follicles located deeper in the skin.
  • Lasers have more advanced skin-cooling systems.
  • Lasers have higher number of pulses fired per second and therefore have shorter treatment times.
  • Lasers can be used safely on dark skin types.
  • There is much more published clinical evidence for laser hair removal that there is for IPL’s.


There are many benefits of using laser hair removal over other types of treatment. Although waxing & shaving are commonly used to remove unwanted hair, these are not long-term solutions & repeated treatment must be carried out on a continuous basis. Laser treatment, is a long-lasting solution which can lead to the permanent reduction of unwanted hair.
